Thursday morning we made our way to the town of spring valley just before 8 to meet with the group. As we fueled our truck in the shopping center we were greeted by a few friends and a few new faces. After a quick sign-in and Driver’s meeting, we were off to the compadre trailhead. Everyone aired down and we started our day in the dirt. About 100 miles south into Baja we came to our first difficult obstacle on our path, the goat trail. The goat trail is infamously used by score as part of the Baja 500 and 1000 race coarse. It’s a downhill bolder covered decent that tests the drivers rock crawling skills. After all the drivers made it thru it was a quick stop for fuel and tacos and then we made it up to mikes sky rancho where we were greeted with beers by the pool as we waited for dinner.
Mike had breakfast ready at 8 and we were able to hit the trails at 9am. We navigated our way down from mikes 4000’ elevation and continued west to the Pacific Ocean to the town of San Quintín. Fernando needed a quick light adjustment and Jason gave his truck a good look over after an off-trail mishap, made for an interesting dinner conversation at the eucalypto restaurant.
Saturday day 3 is the most scenic, driving trails that take us along the coast, beaches, towns, washes, taking us north to Ensenada. During the day we took the race coarse as much as possible. We stayed at the San Nicolas hotel/casino. We made special dinner arrangements so Fernando could watch a boxing match and after we celebrated the win at the downtown bars.
Sunday we got an early start. Connor’s dad had an early flight so they left to go straight back to the US. The rest of the group took the trail thru ojos negros and back north to the Tecate border to conclude our nearly 700 mile adventure thru Baja!
